Conduit panel: COP28, hopeful expectations?

Ahead of the world gathering for COP28 the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, the leading group of climate scientists and experts, will be hosting a panel discussion on the hopes and expectations from Dubai. The group will present the findings from their latest paper on the science behind 1.5oC and what likely overshoot means for the planet, the Global Stock Take and the clear urgency for COP.

Sir David King, Prof Lorraine Whitmarsh Dr Gabrielle Walker, Mark Maslin & Farhana Yamin.
Sir David King is the founder and chair of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge University. Previously he held the position of permanent Special Representative for Climate Change from September 2013 until March 2017. He was Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor from 2000 to 2007, during which time he raised awareness of the need for governments to act on climate change and was instrumental in creating the Energy Technologies Institute.
Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh is an environmental psychologist, specialising in perceptions and behaviours in relation to climate change, energy and transport, based in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath. She is Director of the UK Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations and regularly advises government and other organisations on low-carbon behaviour change and climate change communication.
Dr Gabrielle Walker is an expert strategist, speaker and moderator focused on unleashing capitalism on climate change. She is a TED speaker and works with global companies at boardroom-level, analysing emerging trends, challenging conventional thinking and driving meaningful action. Gabrielle is co-founder of two organisations aiming to accelerate action in the confused but vital area of carbon removals and figure out how to do them right: non-profit Rethinking Removals(working in partnership with the UNFCCC Climate Champions) and for-profit CUR8.Gabrielle gives keynote addresses to corporate audiences around the world and is an accomplished moderator of high-level debates. She has presented many BBC TV and radio programmes, was Climate Change Editor at Nature and Features Editor at New Scientist, has written extensively for many international newspapers and magazines including the FT, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and has authored four books. She earned her PhD at Cambridge University and has taught at both Cambridge and Princeton.
Farhana Yamin is an internationally recognized environmental lawyer, climate change and development policy expert. She has advised leaders and ministers on climate negotiations for 30 years, representing small islands and developing countries and attending nearly every major climate summit since 1991. In addition to founding Track 0, she is an Associate Fellow at Chatham House, a Senior Advisor to SYSTEMIQ and an FRSA. She was voted Number 2 on the 2020 BBC’s Power List with the judges describing her a “powerhouse of climate justice” and is active in numerous community-based social initiatives in Camden. From 2013- 2018, she was an Advisor to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and has been Deputy Chair of the Expert Group of Advisors to the Climate Vulnerable Forum, a coalition of 48 of the world’s most vulnerable countries, that played a key role in the 2015 Paris Agreement negotiations. She is widely credited with getting the goal of net-zero emissions by mid-century into the Paris Agreement through strategic communications and behind the scenes coalition-building. She has worked in private philanthropy as well as published numerous books and articles on the climate change law & social justice.
